5 Ways Schools Are Failing to Prepare Students for the Future

With the rapid development of technology, the business world is changing faster and faster. The skills needed for many jobs today are changing. In the future, many jobs will be automated and will require a different skillset than what is needed in the past. That’s why preparing students for the future is so important. Here are three ways schools can do better to prepare students for their future careers.

Schools are failing to prepare students for the future

A survey by Pew Research found that the majority of adults think the world will change dramatically over the next 20 years. Just 45% of U.S. adults think that people will be able to do many of the things they do today in 20 years. A third of adults think there will be no job for people who have only high school degrees in 20 years. Thatu2019s why itu2019s so important to think about the future before students graduate high school. When I was a student, school did not necessarily focus on career preparation. And today, schools are still failing to prepare students for their futures. Schools are not teaching skills that prepare students for the future Millions of jobs today will be automated. And a lot of those jobs will require new skills that canu2019t be learned in school.

Skills needed for todays jobs

The first thing we need to figure out is what skills are needed by employers and what skills students should be developing. A large number of jobs currently require a combination of different skills. For example, people with a bachelor degree in business are much more likely to find a job that requires a combination of finance, sales, and operations skills than they are to find one that requires just finance skills. Although the skills need to be different for each job, students are only equipped with the skills they are being taught. Without rigorous, relevant, and focused programming in all areas, students won’t have the competency or knowledge to move into the type of jobs that are growing the fastest.

How schools can do better to prepare students

1. Immerse them in different disciplines early on. Most students spend a good portion of their time in one major or a few key fields during their entire high school career. And since it is a broad scope, it is easy for students to fall in love with the more popular programs or majors, particularly ones that focus on things like STEM or technology. However, itu2019s important to build studentsu2019 skill sets in more than one area. By doing so, youu2019re helping them become more well-rounded when they enter college. And itu2019s important to do that early on in their high school career. Even if you think your students will end up in STEM fields or in another relatively popular field like business, itu2019s still a good idea to expose them to a range of subjects.

Preparing students for the future is a very important task. As weu2019ve learned in recent years, the skills needed for jobs in the future will change drastically. If you want your kids to be able to compete for jobs in the future, you need to start planning now. Here are three ways schools can prepare students for their future careers.
