What is a STEM School?
To help you understand what STEM means, I’ve put together the definition below. It’s based on the National Science Foundation, which defines STEM in its definition as the combination of “science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education.” The three things together are what they mean to be STEM. The most recent version of their definition (from 2012) includes a brief explanation of why STEM is important. The scientific method encourages scientific thinking. More specifically, it trains people to think creatively, analytically, and systematically. This can improve scientific understanding of the world around us.
Why should you consider a STEM School?
STEM schools can make a huge impact on the quality of your education. By teaching students a solid foundation in the STEM subjects, you ensure your child will be prepared for the demands of a future career. STEM careers are in demand for a reason, and your child will stand out in a sea of students who can’t explain what they learned in the classroom. They’ll also be more capable of succeeding in STEM-focused industries. STEM schools help your child get into college. Most STEM schools have great reputations, and they often provide their graduates with scholarships. In a few years, your child could be studying something related to science, technology, engineering, or math at an Ivy League school. STEM schools make your child more employable.
What are the benefits of a STEM School?
STEM schools tend to emphasize experiential learning, not just instruction. They incorporate projects, not just information. They encourage students to solve problems, not to memorize facts. They encourage students to think critically and make connections between disciplines, not just perform rote tasks. There are two reasons that an experience-focused school is so beneficial for your child. First, students who have gained some experience with a particular skill set will be much better prepared to solve problems, in more fields, than students who have no experience with that skill. That experience allows your child to apply what they’ve learned in their current field, if they choose to do so, and also for future fields in which they might choose to become involved.
The differences between a STEM school and a traditional school may seem small, but some of the qualities of a STEM school are exactly what you want in a school. STEM schools are better prepared for future generations.
